KENYANS, BEWARE OF THESE VULTURES!!

The vultures are circling up there, ready to swoop on the prey down!!

That is the picture I get when I look at the goings-on in our country today.

A worrying trend is now emerging in the country with regard to the new political dispensation that has been ushered in by the coming into place of the new constitution.

Reports have emerged that political leaders, professionals and other opinion shapers in different counties have been meeting to map out strategies of sharing the positions that have been created in the senate and fro governorship. Such meetings have reportedly taken place in Nakuru and Murang’a counties, just to name a few.

This is rather unfortunate since it only shows that the people who have been controlling politics and resources in this country are working in cahoots again to continue hoarding this power for personal and selfish reasons at the expense of the gullible electorate.

Why do these power barons think that they are the only ones with the monopoly of deciding who to be what in the new political structures?

The aim of these people is only to distribute the new positions to themselves and their cronies at the expense of the common person. I don’t know what criteria they will use to decide who to give what. But one thing I am sure about is that these people will only dish out positions to those who have deep pockets, who are in a position to grease their hands.

What is emerging is that the rules of the game have changed but the players have not changed. The political actors of yesterday will still be the actors of tomorrow if Kenyans are not careful.

Rather than the current members of parliament running away from the national assembly to the regional assemblies, they need to tell the electorate what they have done so far with the mandate they were given during the last elections. If you were a non-performer with the little CDF money, how will you convince us now that with the increased resources that will come to the counties, you will perform better?

What we are seeing is just greed in its worst form. Since now members of parliament will be paying taxes like any other Kenyan, they are running to the counties, where they will be in control of more resources. Perhaps some think that they will escape from the reality of paying taxes.

It is unfortunate that a group of people can come together and purport to speak for the electorate in their counties. Kenyans should not allow this to happen. Every Kenyan, irrespective of station in life, has a right to decide who will lead him or her. People, whether professionals or not, should not meet in a hotel then decide to dish out positions of leadership to each other. This would be the height of impunity if Kenyans allow it to happen!

It is not only professionals or the propertied that can make good leaders. We have people with high school education or even primary school education who can make good leaders. Leadership is not all about papers that one has acquired after sitting for two or three hour exams in an institution of learning. That is only one aspect of leadership. Today, what we need in this country more than anything else is leaders with integrity.

Integrity and wisdom can do more for the country more than papers from Harvard and Yale Universities.

Let those who want to see good leadership in our country help to make the playing field level such that every one will have a chance of presenting his or her credentials to the electorate, who will then decide whom they want to lead them. Otherwise, the power cartels will take control of county resources and wreck havoc there, just like they have done with national resources.
